Abstract

Rite Aid Corp. of Pennsylvania has come to dominate the drug-store industry in Maine in the past few years, and now has 98 stores in the state. Downeast Pharmacy is the only Maine-owned chain in the state, with ten stores, and national chain CVS has 18 stores. There are only 57 independent stores remaining in all of Maine. Some Maine pharmacists allege that Rite Aid wants to put them out of business, and concern has been raised that Rite aid's plans to convert dozens of its locations into mega-stores could mean the demise of the Maine corner drugstore.
