Abstract

The Maine Legislature has been working on new regulations for the elver fishery for months, but failed to produce any rules before the season opening on March 15. The state has sold more than 1,000 licenses this year, but the license is the only requirement. The proposed elver legislation does not establish bag limits, but does limit the number of nets a fisherman can set, and establishes fees. The elver fishery has been marked by conflicts, particularly between dip netters and fishermen who stake out fyke nets. Details.
