Abstract

Houlton Regional Hospital recently eliminated 19 full-time positions, of which seven were vacant. The Houlton Town Council called on the hospital to retain as many American nurses as possible during the cutbacks, fearing that the hospital would retain Canadian nurses because they have guaranteed national health care. Five percent of registered nurses at Cary Medical Center in Caribou are Canadian, as are 17 percent in Presque Isle and 20 percent in Fort Kent.
