Abstract

The Aroostook Valley Railroad was founded in 1910 by Arthur Gould as an electric railway, and connected Presque Isle with Caribou and Sweden. The 33-mile short line will cease to exist by the end of this month, due to financial losses. AVR lost its biggest customer, International Paper, in 1994, and its assets are being sold to Maine Potato Growers of Presque Isle, a cooperative.
