Abstract

Two homes were destroyed in Rockland and others were threatened by an April 16 landslide. Joe Kelley of the Maine Geological Survey had warned about Rockland's unstable shoreline in a 1989 publication that detailed the clay bluffs on Jameson Point, which is not far from the site of the landslide.Kelley said that floods and landslides are part of a natural process that helps maintain the environment, and said a number of other areas in Maine could be subject to slides. A public information meeting on erosion problems in Rockland was scheduled for May 1, and was set up before the landslide. Details.
