Abstract

New regulations, low catches and lower prices have made for a disappointing year for elver fishermen. Most dealers are paying just $150 per pound, half what they paid early in the season and down substantially from the $500 per pound previously available. New dealer fees of $1,000 have led to many dealers closing shop. Dan Morris of the Maine Marine Patrol said there hasn't been any shortage of violations this year, and that the season has exposed some problems with the new regulations.
