Abstract
Bowdoin College plans to construct a $2 million-plus ecology laboratory on Orr's Island. Bowdoin geology professor Peter Lea will serve as director of the new Coastal Studies Center, where both marine biology and terrestrial systems will be studied. William and Irma Thalheimer donated the 118-acre Harpswell property to Bowdoin in 1983, and L.L. Bean President Leon Gorman and his wife donated $2.1 million to the school last year. Bowdoin currently has a bird research station on a remote island near the Maine-New Brunswick border.
