Abstract

Sludge, a byproduct of wastewater treatment, is a mixture of sand, nutrients and microorganisms, with traces of metals and chemicals. Some 600,000 Mainers generate 141 dry tons of sludge daily at 125 Maine municipal wastewater treatment plants. Around 61 percent of Maine sludge was applied to the land in 1995; of the remainder, 36 percent was composted and three percent was landfilled. Land applied sludge provides plant nutrients and organic matter, but some people are still uneasy with applying it to the land. Details.
