Abstract
The U.S. Department of Agriculture has transferred $16.4 million from its Conservation Reserve Program to an agricultural emergency loan fund to help disaster-stricken counties. Aroostook County is one of 2,260 counties nationwide given disaster designation following last year's drought, and one-third of the county's estimated 600 potato farmers suffered losses of more than 30 percent. Around $3 million of the loan fund is designated for Aroostook County, and as many as 60 growers are expected to borrow the low-interest money.
