Abstract

The number of beekeepers in Maine decreased from 800 in 1986 to 401 in 1995. Last year's drought and severe winter resulted in mortality rates of between 30 percent and 80 percent. Maine blueberry growers use from one to four hives per acre to pollinate their crops, and the price per hive has increased from $30-$35 last year to as much as $45 this year. Bees have suffered from two species of mites, prompting researchers at the University of Maine at Orono to study three non-honey-storing species as potential pollinators. Details.
