Abstract

A survey by University of Maine at Orono student Thula Gwebu shows that more than 70 percent of people who shop at farmers' markets would be willing to pay higher prices. Alan Kezis, an economics professor who supervised the study, said a survey he conducted in Portland in the early 1980s showed similar results. Kezis said farmers, who tend to base their prices on supermarket prices and then try to undercut them, need to charge more.
