Abstract
The Maine Audubon Society's 5,000-square-foot Gilsland Farm Environmental Center in Falmouth was designed by architects Rick Renner, Sam Van Dam, amd Carol Wilson to be a model of environmentally sensitive architecture. The Rogers House on Prouts Neck in Scarborough, a 3,000-square-foot summer cottage also designed by Renner, is an example of unsuitable design because it is used only a few weeks a year and protrudes from a wetland atop a marshy headland. The Meadow House in Yarmouth, a 3,500-square-foot passive solar saltbox designed by Portland architect Scott Simons, incorporates an innovative wall system that provides a complete thermal break between the air inside the house and outside.
