Abstract

The directors and friends of the Sentier International des Appalaches/International Appalachian Trail on Saturday made the first through-hike of a section of trail cleared and marked only a day earlier. The four-mile section represented a leg of the first 20 percent of the trail's Maine section. The Canadian portions of the trail are well-advanced when compared with the Maine sections, with trails already existing in Parc de La Gaspesie, over the summits of Mt. Jacques Cartier and Mt. Logan. The SIA/AIT will eventually cover 425 miles or 700 kilometers, with 160 kilometers in Maine, and the goal is to complete the trail by Earth Day 2000.
