Abstract

High water on the West Branch of the Penobscot River resulted in as many rafting accidents by July as in all of 1995, prompting the Maine Warden Service to call a meeting with rafters. Rafters said they will not run Ripogenus Gorge at levels above 3,600 cubic feet per second. Matt Polstein of New England Outdoor Center of Millinocket said an aging of the rafter population is one reason for the increase in accidents.
