Abstract

Rabies, a viral infection that attacks the central nervous system, can infect any warm-blooded mammal, and is always fatal if not detected and treated in time. Rabid animals are not at all unusual in Maine these days, as a rabid epizootic sweeps through the state. A fox that attacked Penny Cote of Windham on July 21 was the 54th animal to test positive for rabies in Maine this year. There were ten confirmed animal rabies cases in Maine in 1994, compared to 101 confirmed cases in 1995 and 69 confirmed cases through the end of August this year. Details.
