Abstract

Noncustodial fathers in Maine are increasingly accusing the courts of gender bias, and question why the mother almost always gets custody, why support orders are often so high and why visitation orders are not enforced. Some noncustodial fathers have responded by creating dads' rights groups such as the Committee for Responsible Parenting, the Coalition for Parental Equity and Maine Dads. Howard Feller, a Portland family law attorney, said men almost always gripe about the amount of child support, and factors such as an alleged or proven history of spousal or child abuse must be considered.
