Abstract

Houlton International Airport currently operates a direction finder system, a safety net in the National Airspace System that is used primarily by non-instrument rated pilots, who sometimes become disoriented. The Federal Aviation Administration plans to decommission all of the 112 vacuum tube systems like Houlton's that currently exist nationwide. Tom Killon of the FAA's Air Traffic Division said the system in Houlton isn't used enough to warrant investing in another system. Some observers say the system could mean the difference between life and death for some pilots.
