Abstract

Some Maine counties have experimented with house arrest and electronic bracelet monitoring for offenders, while others have tried alternative, non-jail sentencing. Some corrections officials believe Maine has only scratched the surface of alternative sentencing. Crowded jail conditions have led to lawsuits, which in some states have led to court orders to reduce overcrowding. Many in corrections in the state believe that alternative sentencing for non-violent offenders is preferable to locking up small-time criminals with murderers and rapists. Details.
