Abstract

The U.S. Census Bureau last week released population estimates showing Maine's population increased by 5,000 over the previous year, to 1,243,000, the first increase since the recession of the early 1990s. State Planning Office Director Evan Richert said his office has suspected that federal population estimates may understate growth in Maine, and cited an increase in the number of housing starts. State planners have considered a number of hypotheses for why population should lag behind housing starts, but have not arrived at a definitive number. Maine population figures 1790-1990, estimate for 1996.
