Abstract
Maine had 136 confirmed rabies cases in 1996, up from 101 in 1995 and ten in 1994. Two rabid skunks were identified in Portland in the past month, worrying state epidemiologist Dr. Kathleen Gensheimer. The presence of rabid animals in Portland, Westbrook and South Portland increases the potential for human infection, which so far has been rare in Maine.
