Abstract

The Maine Municipal Association has proposed applying the six percent state sales tax to more goods and services while exempting $20,000 of the assessed value of property that can be taxes for Maine residents. The property tax-break is based on the premise that Maine is too dependent on property taxes to finance services and local education. The proposed tax reform would have to be ratified by voters in a statewide referendum.
