Abstract

State senator Richard Ruhlin, D-Brewer, has sponsored legislation that would restrict development of logging roads in the unorganized territories. Industrial landowners say the measure would reduce access to wildlands by sport and recreation enthusiasts. Environmentalists say roads fragment the forest and wildlife habitat, degrade water quality and create pressures on pond fisheries. Forestland in the unorganized territories is crisscrossed by more than 25,000 miles of roads, and as much as 1,000 miles of additional roads are being constructed annually. Details.
