Abstract

Gov. King last year appointed the Land Acquisition Priorities Advisory Committee to recommend how and where to purchase new state lands. Voters in 1987 approved a $35 million bond issue for the Land for Maine's Future program, and the money has been spent. Bond issues in 1990 and 1991 were rejected, leaving future acquisitions uncertain. Current funding for land acquisition is limited to around $1 million raised by the Outdoor Heritage Fund lottery program, loon license plates, a credit card issued by MBNA, and federal matching grants.
