Abstract
The Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife spends nearly $2 million annually to stock over a million brook trout, brown trout, lake trout, splake and landlocked salmon throughout the state. Hatchery proponents defend stocking, while others say hatchery fish are disruptive and native populations deserve better protection. Gary Corson of New Sharon, a Maine Guide, said the state needs a clear wild trout policy, and a clear stocking policy. Some wild trout advocates say the state should spend more on habitat improvement, rather than just stocking. Details.
