Abstract

Smelts can be caught by jigging year round, or can be dipped with a net during their spring spawning run. The springtime run is what makes smelts so popular, and the run comes so early in the year that it is the first real outdoor activity. Smelts appear in a landlocked form in some areas, and can vary greatly from lake to lake. Details on some of the author's smelting experiences.
