Abstract
"Maine Perspectives" piece on Martha Ballard, a midwife who practiced near Fort Hallowell during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Ballard's diary was used by Laurel Thatcher Ulrich in reconstructing early Maine domestic history, which in turn was used as text for a PBS film.
