Abstract

New rules for striped bass fishermen in Maine allow fishermen to keep two fish instead of one this year, and one of the legal fish can be one-third smaller than in previous years. The new rules will help to conserve bass populations by protecting female fish in their reproductive prime. Striped bass fishing in recent years has become one of the most popular recreational fisheries in Maine. In 1996 fishermen caught an estimated 1.6 million striped bass, but were only able to keep 2,200 legal fish.
