Abstract

Maine has had its share of writers over the years, some native and some from away. Longfellow was born in Portland, Thoreau visited the north woods and Hawthorne attended Bowdoin College. E. B. White stayed so long that he seemed native, and May Sarton moved to York after starting her literary career. Profiles of some of the writers currently writing in Maine, including Gerry Boyle of China, Monica Wood of Portland, Alice Bloom of Mount Vernon, Elizabeth Cooke of Phillips and Carolyn Chute.
