Abstract

Nurses at the Togus Veteran Administration Hospital haven't seen a pay raise in over two years. Citing ageism and sexism, the 73 percent-female nursing staff -- the youngest of whom is 32 years old -- complained to the Veterans Adminstration and to Maine's Congressional delegation. Nurses' salaries, unlike those of all other VA employees, are mandated by law to be comparable to those of area nurses, not to those of federal employees in similar job grades. The hospital itself was founded in 1866 as the nation's first "soldier's home" following the Civil War.
