Abstract
State representative Joseph Brooks, D-Winterport, sponsored L.D. 916, which would authorize physician-assisted suicide for competent, qualified, dying patients who request it. The Maine Legislature voted to carry the bill over to the 1998 session. The U.S. Supreme Court is currently reviewing other cases that could ultimately affect Oregon's Death wtih Dignity Act, and any similar measure enacted in Maine. The proposed Maine law is modeled on the Oregon law, and focuses on patient control and prevention of abuse. Details, related article on Dr. Faye Girsh, executive director of The Hemlock Society USA.
