Abstract

Maine Times "Special Agriculture Issue," with related articles on the condition of Maine agriculture; organic milk; Maine-raised flax; and farmers' markets. Maine Department of Agriculture Commissioner Edward McLaughlin is optimistic about the future of farming in Maine, citing blueberry harvests, increased production of cranberries and potato marketing efforts. Organically produced milk offers a higher price for farmers, a stable market and reduced transportation costs, and could help small dairy farmers rise above subsistence conditions. U.S. Flax & Linen Company of Presque Isle is growing flax of a quality comparable to France and Belgium, and is selling it to manufacturers such as Guilford of Maine and Brahms/Mount of Hallowell. Farmers' markets are attracting new customers by accepting food stamps. With a list of Maine farmers' markets.
