Abstract
Armand and Kathleen Madore of Rangeley Plantation last year proposed establishing a boarding school called the Western Maine Academy. Opponents of the facility said it was a residential treatment center for disturbed juveniles, and the Maine Land Use Regulation Commission concluded it wasn't a permitted use. The case is now before the Maine Supreme Judicial Court, following a Superior Court ruling upholding LURC's decision. State senator John Benoit wants to allow only day schools in the unorganized territory's residential zones, but LURC decided the issue should be considered in a discussion of permitted uses in all development zones.
