Abstract

The Governor's School Facilities Commission this week presented its findings to the Maine Legislature's Education Committee. The commission is calling for an immediate influx of $30 million, which would be added to the $67 million the state spends annually to help pay off local school construction bonds, and two $35 million bond issues. Commission members are advocating the creation of a State Revolving Renovation Fund and a Maine School Facilities Finance Program. Most public schools in Maine were constructed between 1945 and 1975, with the oldest operating school building dating from 1830.
