Abstract

The Natural Resources Council of Maine spent 14 months investigating the Maine Department of Environmental Protection, and waited more than four months before releasing its findings to the public. NRCM's report detailed various problems at DEP, but when the findings were released the agency received public support and praise. Pete Didisheim of NRCM said when the report was presented to DEP Commissioner Ned Sullivan and Martha Kirkpatrick of the DEP's Land and Water Bureau, Sullivan asked for time to prepare a response and course of action. NRCM determined that private negotiations with the DEP seemed to work better than public scrutiny. Details; related articles.
