Abstract
Feature article on smelts and smelting. Smelts are anadromous fish, living in salt water and returning to fresh water to spawn. Smelts are also landlocked throughout lakes in Maine, where they spawn in freshwater brooks. As many as 200 private smelting camps go out on the Damariscotta River when conditions are right.
