Abstract

Around 11,000 of the estimated 12,000 firefighters in Maine are volunteers. Many Maine towns no longer have the force of volunteer firefighters they once had, and are now more vulnerable to fire. Changes in state and federal laws, however, mean today's volunteers are better trained than ever before. Steve Willis of Maine Fire Training and Education says increased training requirements might be scaring people away from becoming volunteer firefighters.
