Abstract

"30 Years at Maine Times" piece on the "success story" of Austin J. "Jack" DeCoster, who inherited 100 hens and parlayed them into one of the world's largest egg farms. A look at Decosta's autocratic management, with its fundamentalist Christian overtones. Although DeCoster Egg Farms could be called a factory, which produced eggs, DeCoster avoided many regulations, such as minimum wage and child labor laws, by being classed as an agricultural rather than a commercial enterprise.
