Abstract

Feature piece on the proposed 280-mile East-West Highway across Maine and the economic benefits that might ensue from a shorter connection between Montreal and the Maritimes. If a shorter route than the Trans-Canada Highway were constructed across Maine, the potential would exist for high-level usage by Canadian truckers, and the existing 604-mile route would be shortened to 451 miles. The cost of an east-west highway is estimated at $1.3 billion, or about what it would cost to bring all of Maine's existing roadways up to par The need for such a highway might be made redundant by improved roads and train service.
