Abstract
Welles Thurber, a forester who lives in Northport, is organizing a Maine chapter of the American Chestnut Foundation to restore the tree to its natural range from the 19th century. The tree was almost wiped out by a blight introduced from Asia in 1904. The Pine Tree State Arboretum in Augusta will set aside 10 acres as a nursery for cross-breeding disease-resistant saplings. Fred Hebard, who summers in Camden and is a plant pathologist who works with the foundation in Virginia, is cooperating with Thurber and others in Maine. Details on contacting the foundation.
