Abstract

Andy Chase, an associate professor at the Maine Maritime Academy, along with other teachers and sailors, gives arguments against a decision by the U. S. Navy to no longer teach celestial navigation by sextant at the Naval Academy at Annapolis. Chase believes the sextant is necessary for backup if the generally-used electronic Global Positioning System (GPS) or another electronic system, the inertial guidance system, breaks down.
