Abstract
Bowater has confirmed that it might sell its entire Maine operations, after its acquisition of Avenor of Montreal. With the recently announced sale of Sappi land, the decision could mean that 3 million acres of timberland, containing some of Maine's most treasured recreational and scenic assets, could be on the market at once. Bowater plans to sell its Millinocket mill, which employees would like to purchase, and plans to keep and modernize its East Millinocket mill. Chris Lyddan, who writes for the trade publication, "Pulp and Paper," says that "only the established timber investment funds" could be considered legitimate buyers for the timberland.
