Abstract

The U.S. Coast Guard is overseeing a $2.9 million Environmental Protection Agency project which will seek to determine whether the Empire Knight, which sank off of York in 1944, was carrying any mercury aboard. Stowage plans drawn up six months before the ship sailed show that it was supposed to carry 16,000 pounds of mercury, but there is some question as to whether the mercury was actually loaded on the vessel.
