Abstract

Maine's Land Use Regulation Commission issued a one-year permit allowing Cherryfield Foods to irrigate its blueberry fields with water from the Pleasant, Narraguagas and Machias rivers, all in Washington County. The company has been drawing water from the salmon rivers for months without a permit Salmon groups are particularly upset because the water withdrawal limits were based on data for the Narraguagas River, which they contend won't necessarily protect the Pleasant River.
