Abstract
Mark DesMeules of the State Planning Office says a bill to bar personal watercraft on all ponds of 200 acres or less in Maine is no longer a possibility. A measure to ban jet skis on 240 underdeveloped ponds and lakes in the unorganized territories will be difficult to pass without the support of lawmakers from northern Maine. Dave Grush of the Maine Personal Watercraft Association said the group doesn't support a proposal to include bodies of water in southern Maine. The State Planning Office is proposing a mandatory user education and safety program. Details; related article on landowners at Long Pond on Mount Desert Island. A survey found 77 percent of respondents would ban jet skis on the pond.
