Abstract

In 1984, Charlie Howard, a 23-year-old homosexual, was thrown to his death off the bridge over the Kenduskeag Stream in Bangor. Today the city has a gay bar, the Spectrum, and another, Club Vision, which may re-open at a new site; a rapidly growing Outright group for teens; and an annual Gay Pride celebration, which this year was extended to four days. With a focus on this year's Pride festivities, and the growing climate of tolerance in Bangor, a city which still does not offer the variety and openness of Portland's gay community.
