Abstract
In a university-community partnership, the University of Maine at Machias is close to realizing its goal of raising $3 million, to be matched by a challenge grant from the Kresge Foundation. The money is earmarked for the first new building to be built on campus since 1975. The new building, which will house a swimming pool, will be called the Center for Lifelong Learning, and eventually will contain a conference center, bookstore, day-care center, and Internet cafe. The facility will be self-supporting through membership fees and rentals. With information on a similar project at the University of Maine at Farmington, which has united the university and the community beyond the bonds of swimming.
