Abstract
Profile of Charles Duncan, who founded the Institute for Field Ornithology at the University of Maine at Machias in 1983. This year Duncan published the hottest-selling field guide "Warblers." Although he is president of the Association of Field Ornithologists, Duncan's degree is in chemistry. He says Washington County is at the beginning of the boreal zone and is one of the richest areas in the world for bird life, with more species of warblers breeding there than anywhere else in the country. With details on the migratory warbler, how its habitat is threatened, and how clear-cutting has a complex effect on bird populations.
