Abstract
Artist Joe Nicoletti, a lecturer at Bates College, has cancelled a September exhibit at the Chase Gallery in Boston because owner Jeff Chase asked him to remove two of his history paintings. Chase found "Sardanapalus" and "Potiphar's Wife" "disturbing" and a possible threat to his reputation. Nicoletti says they have not yet come to an agreement about splitting the $4,800 in costs that has already been incurred in nearly a year of preparations for the show. With a statement by Portland gallery owner June Fitzpatrick on risks a gallery should take to allow for artistic integrity. Related editorial.
