Abstract
Profile of former U. S. Senate majority leader George Mitchell, 65, who is a candidate for the Nobel Peace Prize for having helped to win an agreement that could end the 30-year "Troubles" of Northern Ireland. The article, based on a lengthy interview with Mitchel, covers the negotiations in Ireland; Mitchell's recent marriage to Heather MacLachlan; and his views on party politics and contemporary political issues, including the Monica Lewinsky scandal, the Independent Council Act, health insurance reform, public education, and the role of government in the 21st century. The career path chosen by Mitchell since his retirment from the Senate in 1994 is contrasted with that of former U. S. senator William Cohen, who is now secretary of defense. With related editorial.
