Abstract

The Natural Resources Council of Maine gathered 200 representatives of environmental groups in Phippsburg last weekend for a river "summit conference," to develop an agenda for the long-term future. Notably absent were legislators and candidates for governor. One participant noted that Maine led the nation in 1982 with a precedent-setting rivers study, but today is showing "plain contrariness" on river protection. Another urged Mainers to make a difference in their watersheds. Environmentalists will go to the Legislature next year with a major proposal for river classification upgrades.
